Ceramics is a durable material — it can last for thousands of years. At the same time, its production process is highly polluting, and raw materials are becoming depleted. In a three-part exhibition series, the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics addresses these pressing issues. In 2025, we present part two, in which the Dutch design duo Lab AIR explores the question: can we still justify making it?
Using the museum’s collection, Lab AIR reveals what it truly takes to produce ceramics. A central element of the exhibition is Smogware, a porcelain tableware series developed by Lab AIR, glazed with fine particulate matter. This dust was collected through a participatory project involving researchers, activists, residents, and ceramicists not only in the Netherlands, but also in cities such as Milan, London, and Delhi. The air pollution made visible in the glaze prompts us to examine its origins. How do we make ceramics, and how might we prevent their environmental cost?
The exhibition also showcases initiatives from around the world that aim to make the ceramics industry more sustainable.
