From February 6th to 8th, 2024, the city of Faenza hosted the first transnational meeting of the project MED-Routes: Enhancing MED sustainable cultural tourism through the creation of eco-itineraries within European Cultural Routes. This is an Interreg Euromed project, of which the Unione della Romagna Faentina is the lead partner, dedicated to the enhancement of sustainable cultural tourism through the Council of Europe Cultural Routes.

Eight European partners and 4 associated partners, including the European Route of Ceramics, La Rotta dei Fenici, Destination Napoleon and The Routes of the Olive Trees, will confront each other over the next 2 years in order to create and disseminate a model of sustainable tourism on a local and low environmental impact basis through the Council of Europe Cultural Routes of the Mediterranean area.

MED-Routes is a project that, drawing inspiration from those routes of peoples and cultures that have crossed the Mediterranean over the millennia and that still represent a large part of the cultural heritage valorised by the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes, aims to create sustainable and alternative tourist itineraries with respect to mass tourism flows.

The project directly involves local stakeholders and tourism and cultural operators, with the aim of assessing the existence of virtuous behaviours in terms of environmental impact, the use of circular economy tools and/or approaches and, in general, the level of attention towards environmental protection and sustainability. The final objective will be the creation of new sustainable cultural and tourist micro-routes and the consequent enhancement of the territories involved in terms of tourism.
